An Original Donald Ross Course, One Of Just 30 In Ohio

Ask any serious golf historian and they'll tell you: "Donald Ross is one of the greatest golf architects in history." Born in Scotland, Ross emigrated to America and designed some of America's top golf courses including Pinehurst #2 and Oak Hill.

In Ohio, Ross built some of the state's top courses including Inverness and Scioto. Ask any serious and knowledgeable golfer and they will tell you: "Having a Donald Ross golf course is extremely special." Of the hundreds of courses in Ohio, only 30 are Donald Ross courses.

Donald Ross built the original 18 holes at Hamilton Elks Lodge #93 in 1925. Today, we call the original 18 holes, the Red and the White courses. It's a par-72 and stretches to 6,484 yards from the back tees.

Michael Hurdzan designed and built the Blue course in 1995. Hurdzan is formerly president of the American Society of Golf Course architects and every major golf publication has ranked his courses among the best new courses in the country.

A good test for low-handicap and professional golfers and playable and enjoyable for all.

On any given week at Hamilton Elks Lodge #93, you'll find every type of golfer...top state amateurs, beginners, ladies, seniors, juniors, "average" golfers, and club professionals. Score is irrelevant. The only thing that matters at Hamilton Elks Lodge #93? Enjoying the game.

The two Donald Ross nines are laid out on gently undulating terrain. The challenge comes not from raw length but from the uneven lies and small greens. Typical of Ross, the course provides a variety of strong par-4s, short-ish and reachable par-5s, and some difficult par-3s where even the low handicap golfer will delighted with a par.

In fact, the par-3 5th on the Red Course is 217 yards from the back tees and the #1 handicap hole. Hamilton Elks Lodge #93 offers some excellent risk-reward holes. At 300 yards, the 7th on the Red Course is a short par-4 but those who decide to drive the hole looking for a birdie or eagle have to negotiate two small ponds in front of the green.

Better players will look at each of the par-5s as birdie opportunities but each can produce big scores. And Hamilton Elks Lodge #93 even has its own "Road Hole" which is the 1st on the White Course. Many a golfer has found their golf ball in the lumber yard across Route 4.

On the Blue Course, the property is flatter and lined with woods but the challenges come from ravines and a large lake. The par-4 fourth is "hopscotch" hole bisected by two ravines. At 336 yards, it's not long but it demands two precise shots to reach the green in regulation.

A Great Club For Juniors And Beginners

While "The Elks" has a healthy reputation among the area's better golfers, it's also an excellent course for juniors and beginners who are learning the great game of golf. The lack of forced carries and hazards on the Red and White courses means that beginning golfers can get around the course with minimal frustrations.

A Haven For Walkers

While many modern courses in the area are difficult to walk, Hamilton Elks Lodge #93 is a haven for golfers who enjoy walking. Greens are close to tees, especially on the Red and White courses and golfers who enjoy walking will find plenty of company.

Full calendar of tournaments and events makes Hamilton Elks Lodge #93 even more enjoyable...there's a tournament for every golfer...

Tournaments and league play take place almost every day during the season at Hamilton Elks Lodge #93. And the PGA professionals organize events for every standard of golfer. And every age, including juniors and seniors.
